Cock rings, also referred to as penis rings, are one of those sex toys that everyone’s heard of, but few are adventurous enough to try. This is a shame, as they can bring untold benefits to your sex life—benefits that you might not even know you’ve been missing out on.

I get it. The idea of putting a tight ring around your genitals is always going to be a little intimidating, but once you understand how to use them, you’ll find that they’re actually not as scary as they look.

With that in mind, I’ve put together this complete guide with everything you need to know about penis rings. I’ll be telling you what they are, how they work, what they can do for your sex life, how to use them safely, and more.

I’ll also be sharing an in-depth buying guide along with some of my top recommendations to help you to pick out a product that’s right for you.

Now, let’s start with the basics.

What is a Cock Ring?

In a nutshell, a cock ring is a circular ring that restricts the amount of blood that can exit the penis. It’s typically worn tightly around the base of your shaft and traps the blood inside it for longer.

The main advantage of this is that it helps you to maintain an erection. Still, there are other secondary benefits too, such as helping you to last longer by delaying ejaculation (stopping the testicles from contracting), making your penis look bigger and more firm, and adding new sensations to the experience.

While the idea of restricting blood flow might seem worryingly unnatural—and indeed, it is—it does mimic a natural process. Your penis works similarly to a pump system. We get an erection when our heart pumps blood to the penis, engorging it. A bodily process then shuts the ‘exit valve’ that allows that blood to escape in order to keep the penis engorged while we’re aroused.

Sometimes, this valve doesn’t work quite the way we hope, which causes us to have trouble maintaining an erection. A penis ring basically creates an artificial valve for you in order to address this problem.

Important note: Before we get any further into the article, I want to say right off the bat that cock rings can be dangerous if used incorrectly. Any device that restricts blood flow to the genitals should be treated with caution.

Make sure you’re aware of the relevant safety precautions you need to follow before you use one, always check and follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and never wear your ring for longer than 20 minutes. I’ve prepared some safety tips of my own further down this guide too, so be sure to read them.

The Many Uses of Penis Rings

As I said, there’s more than one benefit to using a cock ring, and different people will use them for different reasons. Here are some different use cases worth knowing about.

Treating Erectile Dysfunction

One of the most common reasons men use penis rings is to treat erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is a condition that many men (almost half of those aged 65+) suffer from. It causes difficulty in achieving or maintaining an erection for a suitable amount of time.

Cock rings for erectile dysfunction can help to slow the blood flow moving away from the erect penis so that it stays erect for longer.

A word of caution, though: consult your doctor first if you have erectile dysfunction, and you’re thinking about using a cock ring. This will allow you to rule out any underlying medical conditions. Also, if you’re on certain types of medication, it may have adverse effects.

Maintaining bigger and better erections

Even if you don’t suffer from any problems keeping it up, you might want to use a cock ring anyway as it can actually increase the size and firmness of your boner—and help you to last longer.

Bear in mind that we’re not talking about huge differences here. It may appear larger, but only slightly.

More powerful orgasms

Certain penis rings can increase sensitivity, help you to last longer, and prolong the experience for longer-lasting, more powerful orgasms. Who doesn’t want that?

Clitoral & vaginal stimulation

Some penis rings vibrate, thus making them useful as a vibrator to stimulate your partner’s clit. Penetrating her while wearing a vibrating cock ring can rock her insides and improve the experience for both of you.

Upgrade your sex toys

Contrary to what the name implies, cock rings aren’t just for cocks—they’re for your toys too. A lot of people use penis rings to upgrade their vibrators and dildos so that they offer both internal and external stimulation.

Better handjobs (or blowjobs)

Here’s another nifty way you can use your cock ring. If it’s a vibrating ring, either wear it or have your partner wear it on their finger like a real ring while they’re giving you a handjob for a new kind of experience. The vibrations will be intense, so a light touch is all that’s needed here.

If the penis ring is flexible enough, it might even be possible to slip it over your tongue to make your oral sessions even more interesting. Obviously, you’ll need to be careful and be aware of any choking hazards and electrical components like batteries if you try this.

Alternatively, just use the vibrating part of the ring to stimulate your own/your partner’s balls while you’re giving/receiving head.

Nipple play and erogenous zone stimulation

Try using a vibrating cock ring to stimulate your partner’s erogenous zones. Your erogenous zones are the parts of your body that are extra sensitive and erotically charged, and there’s a whole bunch of them. We’re talking about things like nipples, lower stomachs, ears, necks… even armpits!

Placing a vibrating penis ring against these areas is a great way to spice up your foreplay sessions and get you both fired up.

Expand your abilities

A final reason that people use cock rings is to indulge their kinks and enable them to do more in the bedroom. For example, some penis rings come with attached anal beads so you can indulge in some anal play while you’re penetrating your partner.

And that’s just the beginning. There are all sorts of weird, wacky, and wonderful rings out there with features that allow you to expand your natural abilities in all sorts of ways.

Different Types of Cock Rings

When it comes to shopping for penis rings, you really are spoilt for choice. There are so many different types to choose from, and they’re all so wildly different from each other, that it can be a little overwhelming.

To help you to sort through the mess, here’s a quick breakdown of the main types to choose from.

Standard / Non-vibrating

Standard cock rings are the most basic, no-thrills cock rings on the market. They don’t have any fancy features, cords, or batteries, and just slip on like a ring. Depending on the material, it may be either flexible or non-flexible.

Vibrating

Vibrating penis rings are fitted with a small, inbuilt vibrating bullet that stimulates the clitoris and produces a tingling sensation that a lot of dudes enjoy during sex. It’s a great option if your goal is to give her maximum pleasure. Some vibrating cock-rings are double-ended, so they’ll stimulate both of you at the same time.

Cock & ball

Cock & ball rings aren’t for the faint of heart. They come in a figure-of-eight shape with two separate rings; one for your penis, the other for your testicles. They’re difficult to use and get on and can be uncomfortable, but some guys like the sensation. I wouldn’t recommend using these if you’re new to penis rings—best leave them to the pros.

Lasso / Quick-release

These cock rings look and tighten a little like a lasso. They’re completely adjustable and designed to be safe, easy to use, and quick to get on and off. This makes them a great choice for beginners.

You can either wear it around the base of your shaft or around both your cock and balls at the same time, and you have total control over the tightness. Because it’s fully adjustable, you can easily loosen the tightness if you start to get uncomfortable.

Teardrop

Teardrop cock rings (sometimes called ‘tickler’ cock rings’) are shaped like a teardrop, with a pointed edge that juts out from the ring. The edge presses into and massages your perineum as you move around.

Multi-ring

Some penis rings come in a set of 2-3 rings of different sizes. These multi-ring sets allow you to swap them around depending on how tight you want to go or wear them all at the same time along your shaft.

Butt plug combo ring

Some cock rings come with an attached butt plug that you can insert into your anus while you wear it to stimulate the prostate.

Double penetration

This is probably the craziest of all penis rings. It comes with an attached dildo that sits below your cock for double the trouble. If your partner is really kinky and enjoys double penetration, this type of ring might be worth looking into

Penis Ring Buying Guide

Now that you know all about the different types of cock rings, you’re probably itching to buy your own. Before you do, here are a few things to look out for when you’re shopping around.

Type of ring

The first thing to consider is the type of ring you want. For beginners, I’d recommend opting for a flexible, adjustable, stretchable, standard cock ring or quick-release ring. They’re much easier to use and safer, which is important when you’re just starting out.

Size

Sizing up your ring is an important step. If you buy a ring that’s too small, you risk not being able to fit it on, or restricting the blood flow too much and causing pain and discomfort.

To work out what size cock ring you need, grab a measuring tape and some porn. Once you’re erect, wrap it around your penis (and balls, if you’re going for a cock and ball ring), to get the circumference.

After that, divide the circumference by Pi (yep, you’re doing maths now) to get the diameter. Choose a ring that’s ever-so-slightly smaller in diameter than the figure you arrived at so that it comfortably fits without being too tight. For example, if your measurements gave you a 1.9-inch diameter, you’ll want a penis ring with a diameter of around 1.7 inches.

Material

Penis rings come in all kinds of materials, like metal, silicone, glass, plastic, rubber, and leather. Some materials are flexible, and others are non-flexible. As a beginner, you should probably choose something flexible as it’s easier and safer to get on and off.

I’d recommend going for a silicone ring as it feels great and is hypoallergenic and completely body-safe. Body-safe means it doesn’t contain any ingredients that might pose a risk to your health.

Texture

Make sure you also consider the kind of texture you want your ring to have. Some penis rings are completely smooth to the touch, whereas others have ridges and bumps to create a more tactile experience.

Whether or not you enjoy the feel of those extra textures comes down to personal preference. Some people do; some don’t. Think about what you like and choose a ring that has what you’re looking for.

Bells and whistles

Certain cock rings come with all kinds of additional bells and whistles, such as vibration, waterproofing, attached butt plugs, anal beads, and more. There’s a penis ring out there to meet pretty much every sexual need and desire, so ask yourself what you’d like yours to be able to do and shop around until you find it.

Price

Last but not least, think about the price. Cock rings can range from a few bucks to hundreds of dollars—it all comes down to quality, material, and functionality. The highest quality, vibrating, silicone rings won’t come cheap, but basic hard plastic rings are likely to be much more affordable.

Try to find something that fits your budget, but remember, you get what you pay for. I’d personally recommend spending more, rather than less, on any sex toy, as the quality is extra important for safety and hygiene reasons.

Top 5 Best Cock Rings

To save you some time, we’ve picked out what we think are the top 5 best penis rings on the market right now. Check them out below!

1. The RingO Penis Ring

The RingO penis ring is your standard, no-thrills ring. Sometimes, the simplest things in life are the best, and the RingO is as simple as it gets; it’s a circular, smooth ring with a 1.75″ in diameter. Because it’s so simple, it’s great for beginners. All you have to do is slot it onto your shaft, and away you go.

The reason this is my number one recommendation for is that:

  1. It’s made of silicone, which makes it flexible, body-safe, and comfortable
  2. It’s highly affordable and great value-for-money

Available from just $6, you can get your hands on this for the same price as a couple of cups of coffee. If you’re just trying out penis rings, you really have nothing to lose at this price, so give it a shot.

2. The Buddy Ring

Next up, we have the Buddy Ring. This is a great lasso-style ring that won’t break the bank.

The best thing about the Buddy Ring is how easy it is to use. All you have to do is secure it in place and hold down the button when you want to release it. You can use the button to adjust the fit to give you complete control over the snugness.

Because it’s adjustable, you don’t have to slide it on while you’re flaccid, you can put it on after you’re fully erect.

Again, it’s made of stretchy, smooth silicone that feels extremely comfortable and slick and is easy to clean. Overall, a great option for beginners

3. The Versa Tingler Vibrator Ring

Now we’re moving onto the more exotic products. The Versa Tingler Vibrator Ring is a naughty little vibrating cock ring that doubles up as a finger vibe. In other words, you can use this to massage her clit and tickle her pleasure spots with your finger, as well as to rock her insides.

It boasts dozens of little pleasure nubs that create some really intense vibrations and a removable single-speed vibrating bullet that you can take out of the ring if you so choose.

It measures around 2.25 inches wide, and again, it’s made from stretchy silicone, so you know it’s body-safe and comfortable. Considering this is a vibrating ring, it’s pretty good value for money and is available at under $20. Not bad, right?

4. Verge by We-Vibe

So far, I’ve been showing you affordable penis rings designed to offer a good balance between value and quality.

The Verge by We-Vibe isn’t that. This ring doesn’t try to be affordable; it’s a luxury, premium product that is built for the most demanding sex toy connoisseurs out there. It doesn’t come cheap, but it’s probably the best vibrating teardrop ring on the market.

The shape is designed to stimulate the perineum with pressure and vibration while still being extremely comfortable. It’s perfectly contoured and made with high-quality silky smooth silicone. The vibrations are more ‘rumbly’ than they are ‘tickly,’ which a lot of people prefer.

My favorite thing about the Verge, though, is that it’s compatible with the We-Connect app. We-vibe’s cutting edge products can be connected to their smartphone app, which allows you to control the toy in real-time.

This means you can hand over control to your partner and let her experiment with the vibrations for you. You can choose between different preset modes or create your own.

It’s also waterproof, so feel free to use it in the shower or bath!

5. Fifty Shades Freed Steel Love Ring

Last but not least, we have the Fifty Shades Freed Steel Love Ring. This penis ring takes inspiration from the hit novel that we all know and love. If you or your partner are fans of E.L. James, you’ll appreciate the detailed engraving that makes it look like a giant wedding ring.

The main reason I included this ring, though, is because of the material. All of the other rings I’ve mentioned so far have been made from silicone, but this one’s made from steel.

That makes it non-flexible, so you’ll need to be extra careful when using it, and it isn’t as suitable for beginners. However, on the other hand, the extra firm grip that steel provides can make your boner even harder and last even longer. Plus, it can be warmed or cooled in water if you want to experiment with temperature play.

How to Use a Penis Ring Safely

Once you’ve found a ring, you need to learn how to use it. It’s important to get this bit right as using a penis ring incorrectly can be dangerous. It goes without saying that you should check your manufacturer guidelines as a first resort and adhere to all their safety precautions listed therein at all times.

We’ve put together our own guide on how to use a cock ring safely. Here it is, broken down into five easy steps.

Note: The instructions below are for a standard cock rings. For cock and ball rings, see further below. Also, make sure you see the safety tips below before attempting to put on your penis ring and ensure that both you and your partner know how to get it off in case the urgent need arises.

Step 1: Prepare the area

When wearing a penis ring, pubes can get in the way and spoil your fun. You don’t want that, right? If not, make sure you shave or at least trim your pubic hair before putting it on. Trust me, getting your pubes trapped in the ring is definitely NOT a pleasurable experience.

Step 2: Lube up (optional)

I’d recommend using lube to make it easier to slide the ring on. This isn’t strictly necessary, but it will make it easier to put it on if it’s very tight. Squeeze a bit onto your hand and spread it around the inside of the ring, as well as along the base of your penis.

If you’re using a silicone penis ring, certain types of lube like silicone-based lube may react badly with it, so use a water-based lube instead.

Step 3: Place the ring on a flaccid or semi-erect penis

You should put your cock ring on when your penis is either flaccid or semi-erect, not when it’s fully erect. Assuming you’ve chosen the right size, it should be pretty simple to do this. Either have your partner place it around your cock or hold it yourself and stick your penis through it.

Step 4: Slide it down to the base and make sure it fits

Once it’s on, slide it down to the base and make sure it fits correctly. Ideally, it should fit with a firm grip but not cause any noticeable discomfort. The blood flow should be partially restricted but not entirely.

If it hurts or just doesn’t feel right once you’ve got it on, take it back off as soon as possible. It isn’t worth risking hurting yourself by persisting with it.

Step 5: Do NOT use it for longer than 20 minutes at a time

Once it’s on there and you’re happy with it, get to it! Enjoy your new cock ring in whatever way you see fit, but make sure you don’t wear it for longer than 20 minutes at a time (or 30 at a push if it isn’t too tight).

Wearing it longer than that puts you at risk of some very nasty health effects, including nerve damage and numbness. I don’t need to tell you that you want to avoid that at all costs, so after 20 minutes, get that thing off of there. Take it off earlier if you’re experiencing any unexpected sensation, discomfort, pain, or coldness.

Also, NEVER fall asleep with your ring on. I can’t stress how important this is. I like a post-sex snooze as much as the next guy, but I’d never even think about doing it if I had a penis ring on.

What about cock and ball rings?

Cock and ball rings are a little trickier to get on. In this case, you need to carefully put one testicle at a time through the ring first, then once they’re both nestled in there comfortable, slot your flaccid penis in. There’s a knack to it, so you might want to watch a YouTube video or something to give you some visual clues.

Essential Safety Tips

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, safety is important here. You’re working with something that restricts blood flow, so you can’t afford to mess around. Here are some safety guidelines that you should always follow when using a cock ring.

  • Don’t use a penis ring if you have any kind of blood-clotting disorder, nerve disease, or any similar condition
  • Speak to your doctor before using a penis ring if you’re taking drugs for erectile dysfunction
  • Never fall asleep with a penis ring on
  • Buy the right size for your penis
  • Make sure both you and your partner know how to remove it before putting it on
  • Use a stretchy, flexible material if you’re a beginner
  • Don’t use a penis ring while under the effects of alcohol or drugs that might lead you to pass out or fall asleep while wearing it
  • Don’t use weighted or heavy rings as they risk causing nerve damage
  • Remove your penis ring if you’re experiencing any kind of unusual sensation or discomfort
  • Don’t wear your cock ring for longer than 20 minutes at a time
  • Don’t use penis rings made of materials you’re allergic to
  • Keep your ring clean and free of bacteria
  • Be careful when using a penis ring with a condom; it may tear it.

Care & Maintenance

It’s important to take good care of your cock ring if you want to get a lot of use out of it. Caring for your penis ring appropriately will help it to last longer and help to protect you from hygiene-related problems like UTIs.

Here are some penis ring care and maintenance tips:

  • Clean your penis ring before and after use—that means each and every single time you use it. Depending on the material, you may be able to clean it using a wet wipe, sex toy cleaner, or just warm soapy water.
  • Don’t miss the nooks and crannies—if you’re using a textured ring, use a cloth or brush to make sure you get into the cracks and crevices when you’re cleaning it, as these are the perfect place for bacteria to hide in.
  • Think about the material—certain materials need to be cleaned in specific ways. Check your manufacturer’s guidelines for specific cleaning instructions.
  • Don’t forget to dry it—once you’ve cleaned it, dry it before you store it away, as damp and mold can ruin your cock ring.
  • Store it away from your other sex toys—some sex toys react with other sex toys (silicone reacts with silicone), so you should store your penis rings in separate bags so that they don’t accidentally rub against each other in storage and become damaged.
  • Store it in a cool, dry, dark place—sunlight, heat, and moisture ruins sex toys and breaks down the material.
  • Look out for shrinkage—some penis rings can shrink over time, so keep an eye on them and, if it looks like it might have shrunk, replace it.
