In this post, I’ll walk you through the vast range of anal dildos on the market right now and show you how to get the most out of them. I’ll share my BEST tips and suggestions for using them and teach you the most amazing positions and techniques that you can use tonight…and see some incredible results!

What are Anal Dildos?

An anal dildo is a special type of dildo that has been specifically designed for anal penetration. Most dildos designed for anal are smaller than traditional dildos and have flared bases to prevent the dildo from going too far into the anal canal, offering both comfort and safety. Anal dildos differ from butt plugs in that they are designed to be actively moved in and out, whereas butt plugs are designed to be slipped into the anal canal and left in place.

Anal dildos can be broadly categorized into two main types: representational and nonrepresentational. Representational ones come in penis-like shapes, whereas nonrepresentational ones can resemble anything from smooth silicone shafts to sculpted glass works of art!

Types of Anal Dildos Explained

Anal dildos come in a vast range of colors, shapes and sizes; they can be made from silicone, jelly, plastic, glass, metal or wood. To help you cut through the confusion, here are the main types of you should know.

Starter Dildos

Starter dildos are typically made from soft silicone and have a tip diameter of just one inch or less – perfect for anal debutantes! Nonrepresentational starter dildos usually have a slight curve and a wide base meaning they can be mounted on a strap-on harness. Representational models are penis-shaped with ribs and veins that can help add new sensations to any butt-play session!

Standard-Sized Dildos

Standard-sized dildos are perfect for people with some experience in butt play. They are usually penis-shaped and feature a tapered tip to make insertion easier. Nonrepresentational dildos usually have a slight curve (to help stimulate the male prostate or the female A-spot) while realistic ones mimic the same size and shape as real penises. They can be worn on a strap-on harness, making them perfect for pegging!

Glass Dildos

Glass dildos make anal play sinfully easy and have a wide range of features that are sure to excite anyone’s back door! Most glass dildos feature curves, swirls, and other textures on the main shaft to provide some prostate stimulation for men and A-spot stimulation for women. As glass naturally retains heat and cold, glass dildos are easy to heat up or cool down for some exciting spine-tingling thrills!

Wearable Dildos

Wearable dildos are a specific type of dildo that is designed to be mounted on a strap-on harness (or on a penis) to provide anal penetration. Wearable dildos that loop around the shaft are great for guys who want to give their partner the thrill of double penetration during P-in-V (penis in vagina) sex!

Double Dildos

As the name suggests, double dildos have penis-shaped heads on both ends – perfect for women who want to explore double penetration during solo play and for couples who want to explore simultaneous backdoor action!

Inflatable Dildos

For those who want to push their limits, this type of dildo comes with a hand pump to increase the girth of the dildo once inserted.

Gyrating Dildos

Although anal dildos are generally non-vibrating, some battery-powered dildos offer an exciting gyrating and thrusting action that will drive you wild!

Monster Dildos

For men and women who are more experienced with anal sex toys, there are ‘monster dildos’ that are far larger than the average dildo – certainly NOT for the faint of heart!

How to Choose the Right Dildo

With a vast array of shapes, sizes, and types of dildos on offer, how can you choose one that suits your needs and desires? The answer lies in your level of experience and your goals.

For Beginners

If you’re new to butt play, you should choose a small, nonrepresentational anal starter dildo made from silicone or jelly. Even a one-inch dildo can be a stretch when you’re just starting out! I recommend avoiding realistic dildos with ridges, veins, and bulges until you gain more experience of anal play.

For Men

If you’re male or have a prostate, you should consider buying a prostate massager. This type of anal dildo is specifically designed to stimulate the prostate gland in just the right ways and can give you a mind-blowing prostate orgasm!

For Those Who Need More Stimulation

If you’ve tried anal play and have been left feeling non-plussed, you may like to consider a gyrating or thrusting dildo. These models are sure to hit all the right spots internally – great for some spine-tingling thrills! If you’re already experienced with things like anal fingering, you may crave the harder stimulation that only glass, steel, or wooden dildos can offer!

For Those Who Like Being Stretched

If you want to take your fun to the next level and love the sensation of having your butt hole stretched, you’ll want to try an inflatable dildo! These pump-up marvels will slip right into your butt with a little bit of lube. Once inserted, you can use the hand pump to push the dildo to your desired girth. If you want to experiment with anal training and push your limits, you can graduate to using a monster anal dildo!

Choosing the Right Lube

As the anal canal doesn’t self-lubricate like a vagina, lube is ESSENTIAL whenever you use an anal dildo. There are four main types of lube to choose from; water-based, silicone, oil-based, and desensitizing. Here’s everything you need to know to choose the right one!

Anal sex can hurt, so make sure you read this article first.

Water-Based Lube

The softest, gentlest type of lube is water-based; it’s easy to apply, quick to clean up and won’t stain. Water-based lube is safe for ANY material so you can use it on any anal dildo. One caveat is that water-based lube tends to dry out faster than other types of lube, meaning you have to reapply it more often.

Silicone-Based Lube

Silicone-based lube is much longer-lasting than water-based lube and a little goes a long way. As it isn’t water-soluble, silicone lube doesn’t dry or ‘gum up’ as water-based lube does and it won’t wash away in the shower or pool (if that’s where you like to get busy!). Silicone lube stays smooth and slick for a long time, helping to make any anal dildo feel amazing!

Silicone lube is hypoallergenic and is 100 percent safe to use with latex and most types of safer sex material used to make dildos such as silicone, nitrile, polyurethane. You may have heard that silicone lube reacts badly with silicone toys, creating discoloration and microscopic pores. The main reason is that low-quality sex toys labeled as silicone actually contain cheaper substitutes such as TPR or TPE (Thermoplastic Rubber or Thermoplastic Elastomer). If you buy a 100-percent medical-grade silicone dildo, you should be fine using silicone lube.

The two drawbacks of silicone lube are its relatively high price and the fact that it can stain fabric and clothing.

Oil-Based Lube

Oil-based lube is super-thick and long-lasting, making it popular for anal fingering, anal sex and extreme acts like anal fisting! It isn’t compatible with latex so be sure to use non-latex condoms, gloves or dental dams if you want to use an oil-based lube with your anal dildo. If you’re using a glass or metal dildo, oil-based lube is a good choice; its main drawback is that it can stain.

Desensitizing Lube

Desensitizing anal lube can help ease the discomfort of using an anal dildo by minimizing friction and lightly numbing the nerve endings in and around the anus. Most desensitizing lube is water-based making it perfect for any type of material and ideal for a long-lasting session!

Personally, I don’t recommend using desensitizing lube during anal play. Pain is your body’s way of telling you to stop and trying to ‘push through the pain’ can lead to serious injury. If you follow my steps for preparing to use a dildo, you should find the experience completely pain-free and extremely enjoyable!

How to Prepare to Use an Anal Dildo

Once you’ve chosen your dildo and picked out the right lube, you may be wondering, “How do I get started?” The key to maximizing pleasure is preparing your mind and body for the action ahead. Here is my step-by-step guide to doing just that!

Step 1. Relax and Pamper Yourself

To get yourself in the right mindset and help your body unwind, I recommend taking a long hot soak in the tub or a steamy shower. Use aromatherapy soap or shower gel to help relieve tension in your muscles and brush away the cobwebs. A soothing bath or shower will help your body relax while you get as clean as possible.

Step 2. Consider Hygiene

Despite what you may have heard, you don’t need to give yourself an enema before playing with an anal dildo. Poop is stored in the upper bowels, not in the anal canal, so you shouldn’t have any nasty surprises when you start anal play. Having a bath or shower and properly drying yourself is ideal, but using an antibacterial cloth or wet wipe can be a good alternative.

That being said, many people like to use an anal douche to clean themselves prior to starting anal play.

If this is something you might be interested in, here’s what to do. After taking a bath or shower, simply fill the anal douche with saline or warm water, lubricate the tip with your favorite lube, sit on the toilet and insert it into your butt. Gently squeeze the bulb to push water into your anus, hold it for a few moments and then release it into the toilet bowl. Repeat this process a few times until the water runs clear.

Step 3. Clean Your Toy

You should always clean and sterilize your dildo before and after use. You can use traditional methods such as a sex toy cleaner or some warm, soapy water. You can also clean some dildos (like glass and metal models) by putting them in your dishwasher or a pot of boiling water after use. Even if you have cleaned your toy after your last session, I still recommend cleaning it before you use it as well, just in case it has picked up any dirt or bacteria while in storage.

Step 4. Lube Up

Before you start using a dildo, you should apply plenty of lube to your anus and around your anal area. Most couples apply lube during foreplay and incorporate it into activities such as anal fingering – get my best tips here!

If you don’t want to worry about getting lube on your hands or sheets, you may want to try a lube shooter.

This clever tool has a thin neck so you can deposit lube into your anal canal easily and comfortably. It also helps your anal muscles relax and get ready for accepting an anal dildo.

3 Ways to Warm Up Before Using an Anal Dildo

Once you’re nicely clean, relaxed, and fully lubed up, dildo in hand, you likely can’t wait to just start thrusting away! But slow down! Using a dildo for anal play takes care and attention; warming up is extremely important! Here’s my simple three-step guide to making it pain-free!

1. Start Small

The key to warming up is starting as small as possible and gradually working your way up. Some of the steps you took during the preparation phase such as using an anal douche or a lube shooter should help! Both douches and shooters have incredibly slim tips that will slip right into your ass with a little lube. This helps your anal muscles relax and will give you time to become accustomed to the sensation of having something in your butt before you start using a dildo.

2. Try Anal Fingering

If you plan to use your dildo in partnered play, I recommend starting with anal fingering. Fingering helps your anal muscles relax before you try to accommodate a dildo.

If your partner is female or has a vagina, you can easily incorporate anal fingering into foreplay activities such as cunnilingus – it will feel amazing! (By the way, it anal fingering compliments blowjobs just as well!).

3. Use a Butt Plug

If you’re not into anal fingering, you can try using a small butt plug that tapers to a very narrow tip. A butt plug will slip in much more easily than a dildo and will help your muscles relax. For solo play, try riding the dildo on the floor or against a wall until you feel your muscles relax. If you’re using a dildo during partnered play, try having your partner use it on you in your favorite position until you are nice and relaxed.

After warming up, you probably have some questions before you start using an anal dildo, such as:

How deep should I go?

When learning how to use an anal dildo, it’s important to know that most of the sensitive nerve endings are packed around the anus and in the first third of the anal canal. This means that you don’t necessarily have to thrust deeply to get the maximum pleasure!

As the anus and the lower portion of the anal canal are so richly populated with nerve ending, these areas are especially sensitive to vibration and touch. You can give yourself or your partner plenty of pleasure by keeping the depth to one or two inches.

Remember: Dildos don’t need to go in deep to be pleasurable!

How deep can I go?

A few inches along the anal canal lies the Dentate line and beyond that lies the rectum. This region has comparatively fewer nerve endings than the anus or anal canal and is more responsive to pressure than vibration or touch.

If you want to try thrusting more deeply, you should know that the inner surface of the anal canal is actually part of the internal sphincter. As this muscle is controlled by the central nervous system (CNS), it isn’t under voluntary control. In other words, you can’t make this muscle relax. If you rush into anal sex without warming up, you may injure your internal sphincter.

Learning to relax your internal sphincter takes time and practice, so be sure to read my complete guide to preparing for anal sex so that using an anal dildo is pain-free and extremely enjoyable!

The Best Anal Dildo Techniques to Try Tonight!

Once you’re fully warmed up, it’s time to try some incredibly pleasurable techniques on yourself or your partner. So get ready to experience some mind-blowing results!

1. The ‘Filling Feeling’

If you’re just getting started with dildos for butt play, the Filling Feeling technique can help you ease into butt play in style AND comfort!

How it’s done:
If you’re flying solo, try lying on your back with a pillow under your hips and spreading your legs apart in a comfortable position. Start to masturbate and then reach down with the lubed up dildo until the tip is pressing against your anus. Gently ease the tip inside your body and push it in a few inches.

You don’t need to move the dildo to enjoy using it in this position. Simply find a position that feels comfortable and keep the dildo there while you stimulate yourself to orgasm! If you continue to masturbate with the dildo inside you, it will feel incredible!

Advantages:

  • If you are female or have a vagina, using a slightly curved dildo with this technique lets you stimulate your A-spot at the back of your vagina. Combining this with clit stimulation will feel incredible! (Get my best fingering techniques here!)
  • If you are male or have a prostate, using a prostate massager with this technique will stimulate your P-spot! As there is no ‘try-before-you-buy’ with sex toys, the first prostate massager you buy may not feel comfortable. Try buying a few different shapes and sizes until you find one that stimulates your prostate. You can also use a dildo with a slight curve to achieve the same effect.

2. Milking the P-spot

Once you are comfortable with having your anal dildo inserted while you pleasure yourself, it’s time to add some movements to ratchet up the pleasure! This is known as ‘milking the P-spot’.

If you’re male, this will help excite your prostate – or P-spot – and may even make you orgasm WITHOUT stroking your shaft!

If you’re female, (or your partner is female) you’ll likely know all about the G-spot and how it’s part of the clitoris’ internal complex. But an equally important area to know about is the A-spot or Anterior Fornix Erogenous zone. This is found near the cervix, at the back of the vagina and is also part of the clitoris!

While you can, of course, stimulate the A-spot through regular P-in-V intercourse and deep fingering, you can also stimulate it with an anal dildo. As the flesh between the anal canal and the vagina is so thin, the tip of a dildo can provide some intense A-spot pleasure! Not every woman will find using one pleasurable, but if they do, THIS is the reason!

With enough practice and the right dildo, you’ll be able to pleasure your woman and give her a SHAKING orgasm!

How it’s done:
Lie on your back or in your favorite position for anal fingering and start pleasuring yourself. Slowly insert the lubricated tip of your dildo into your anus. While you continue stroking and rubbing yourself, use your other hand to start gently moving the dildo in and out of your anus. To switch things up, try gently rocking just the tip of the dildo in and out – and get ready to feel the earth move!

Advantages:

  • For guys, this technique is almost guaranteed to hit their prostate and feel intensely pleasurable!
  • For women, this technique should make the tip of the dildo hit their A-spot and feel incredible, especially if they rub their clit throughout!

3. Deep thrusting

If you’ve read my guide to preparing for anal sex, you’ll know that with practice, you can learn to relax your internal and internal sphincter muscles to allow some SERIOUSLY deep thrusting! Here’s how it’s done.

How it’s done:
This advanced technique is all about diving into and out of the anal cavity with your dildo. For solo play, if your dildo has a suction cup, it can be mounted on a hard, smooth surface such as a door, a tiled wall or the mirror on a wardrobe. Kneel on your hands and knees and move back until you can guide the tip of the dildo into your anus. Rock back slowly until you can comfortably start riding the dildo!

If your anal dildo lacks a suction cap, try placing it on a chair and riding it cowgirl style instead!

Advantages

  • Although you won’t get that too internal satisfaction from deep thrusting (due to the lack of nerve endings), this technique will give your anus and the first third of your anal canal more stimulation as each thrust will make more of the dildo’s surface area move in and out of your body.
  • This technique is extremely versatile and can enhance both solo and partnered play.

4. Double Penetration

Once you’re comfortable with deep thrusting, one of the best techniques to experiment with is double penetration! DP is one of the most common sexual fantasies for both men and women and a dildo is PERFECT for turning your sexual fantasies into reality!

If you’re female or have a vagina, you can try double penetration using an anal dildo and a regular dildo or your man’s penis. I suggest inserting the dildo as if trying the Filling Feeling technique and rubbing your clit throughout until it feels comfortable. When you’re ready, insert a lubed-up dildo into your vagina and use your favorite techniques to enhance the pleasure, or have your partner do this!

The second option is to have your guy use a wearable dildo and have P-in-V sex. While inside you, he can guide the dildo into your ass until both his penis and the dildo start moving in unison. If your partner is female, she can try the same technique while wearing a strap-on dildo.

The Best Positions For Using an Anal Dildo

You can use an anal dildo in almost ANY position and there are certainly no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ positions to try it in! However, there are certain positions that outshine the rest and help take your fun to the next level!

Solo Play – The Best Positions For Solo Anal Play

If you’re using a dildo for self-pleasure, there are a range of exciting, comfortable positions you can try.

1. Sideways

After taking a nice, long shower and getting yourself nicely lubed up, try lying on your side, either on the floor, the couch or on the bed. Support your head on a pillow and place another pillow under your upper-knee if you need the support. This will open your butt and give you easy access to insert the dildo with ease.

2. Lying Down

If you usually prefer masturbating while lying on your back and facing the ceiling, you may want to experiment with a dildo in this position. Try placing a pillow under your butt to give yourself easy access to your derriere. You can also experiment with pulling your knees to your chest for ease of access.

3. Facing Down

If lying face down is your jam when you masturbate, you can try this position with any dildo. Try putting your hands over your back to thrust the dildo into yourself while you rub yourself or grind into the bed.

4. Sitting

An extremely comfortable position for using a dildo for butt play is sitting, whether on the floor, on a chair or on a bed. Use a small mirror to give yourself a good view of the action while you get going.

5. Riding

Last, but by no means least, is to try riding a dildo. This works especially well if the dildo has a suction cup as you can stick it to the floor, a bathroom wall, or any other flat, smooth surface that takes your fancy. Riding offers greater movement and stimulation than any other position as you can sink down or raise yourself up as you see fit to change the angle and depth of penetration.

Partnered Play – The Best Positions For Using an Anal Dildo With Your Partner

If you’ll be using an anal dildo with a partner, I want to share with you five incredible positions that you can use tonight…and see some mind-blowing results!

1. Spooning

The Spoon is one of the gentlest and more relaxing sex positions and is perfect for couples who want to experiment with a dildo for butt play for the first time!

Technique
The receiving partner lies on their preferred side with their head resting on a pillow. They move their top leg forward as their partner snuggles in behind them. The active partner starts to kiss their neck while positioning their top leg between their partners’. After applying lube on their fingers, they reach down to start to fingering their partner’s ass (get my best tips here), before using their favorite dildo techniques!

2. The Boss’ Chair

The Boss’ chair is a crazy-hot blowjob position that is perfect for guys who want to experiment with butt play!

Technique
He gets naked and sits on a recliner in a comfortable position with his feet on the floor. She kneels between his legs and brings one of his feet up onto her thighs. She starts to go down on him and alternates between giving him a blowjob and fingering his ass. (She can even reach down and give him a rim job if she wants!). After applying enough lube, she can penetrate him with the dildo while continuing to suck his dick!

3. The Lazy Girl

The Lazy Girl is basically the Boss’ Chair for girls! It’s not only great for receiving great cunnilingus; it also offers easy, yet comfortable, access for women who want to experiment with butt play!

Technique:
Have your woman sit on a sturdy chair with her feet on the seat and her legs wide open. Kneel on the floor and move her feet onto your thighs so that she’s nicely supported. Start kissing and nibbling your way up her inner thighs until she is squirming with anticipation and then break out your best cunnilingus moves (read my best tips here!).

While eating your woman’s pussy, use a nicely lubed up finger to start fingering her ass (see how here) and then introduce the dildo to take her pleasure to the next level! Any chair works great but a swivel chair offers even more exciting movements!

4. The Sixty Nine Position

The classic Sixty Nine position is one of the best options for couples who want to experiment with anal dildos!

Technique:
Lie down on the bed and let your woman straddle your face with her knees just outside your shoulders. She lowers herself onto your mouth and you start eating her pussy (get my best pussy eating tips here!). While she gives you a blowjob, you can start fingering her ass with a lubed-up finger until she’s relaxed enough to accept the dildo.

If you want to try butt play yourself, simply switch places into the Inverted Sixty-nine position!

5. Gift Wrapped

The Gift Wrapped position is a facing variation of the Spoon position and is an incredibly relaxing way to experiment with dildos.

Technique:
Both you and your partner lie on your sides facing each other. Have your woman spread her legs and then ‘hop’ over so that your waist is resting on her inner thigh. Note: Most of your weight should be on your elbows and hips, not her! She wraps her legs around your lower back and you both embrace. While kissing and fondling each other, you can reach around and starting fingering her ass with a nicely lubed up finger. After getting her nicely relaxed you can penetrate her with a lubed up anal dildo.

Top 3 Advanced Anal Dildo Techniques

If you’ve found this guide more ‘vanilla’ than ‘out there’ – don’t worry, I’ve got you! In this section, I’ll share the top 3 hottest, kinkiest and most erotic dildo techniques you should try! These simple steps will make you or your partner SCREAM with pleasure for all the right reasons! So let’s get right to it!

Make it Hot

Temperature play is all about experimenting with heat and coolness to create some new and exciting sensations! While silicone and wooden dildos won’t be much help, glass, steel and ceramic dildos are highly conductive and are excellent for experimenting with anal play!

To take your fun to the next level and open up a whole new world of stimulation and sensations, try taking a glass dildo and running it under warm water to heat it up. You’ll be amazed by how much more natural this makes the dildo feel, especially if you use it to give yourself or your partner a soothing massage!

Make it Cold

Next, try placing the dildo in the fridge for a few minutes to cool off. Pleasuring yourself or your S.O. with a chilly anal dildo is awesome for nipple-raising tingles or toe-curling thrills! It will feel icy cold, without having to worry about dripping water everywhere!

Remember: It is possible to make highly conductive materials too hot or too cold! Never place a dildo in boiling water or in the freezer prior to using it. I suggest using ONLY running hot water from a tap and the coolness of a fridge.

Make it Big!

Most people shy away from inflatable dildos as they don’t have a big appetite for penetration. However, trying anal dildos without inflation is missing out on HALF THE FUN!

Why?

Well, as I explained earlier, most of the nerve endings are packed around the anus and the first third of the anal canal. Venture any further in and your anal dildo won’t be doing too much. However, the upper anal canal IS sensitive to pressure and this is where inflatable dildos come in.

Inflatable dildos start off at around one inch wide and easily slip into your chute just like a regular dildo. Once inside, you can use the attached pump ball to inflate the dildo to a full two inches or MORE! This is not only much more comfortable than trying to slip a monster dildo into your butt; it also gives your upper anal canal the pressure that it craves!

Once enlarged, an inflatable dildo will give you masses of pleasure and hit your prostate or A-spot in ALL the right ways like NOTHING else! Once you climax, simply tap the quick-release valve on the pump ball for instant comfort!

Conclusion

If you’ve ever been curious about anal dildos and wanted to know more, hopefully, I’ve answered all your questions in this entertaining guide!

With the right preparation and precautions, anal dildos can be a safe, fun way to enhance your solo fun, or have a wickedly good time with your partner!

  1. omg Laura you’re a genius! I’ve always had trouble pleasing my husband with blowjobs as my mouth is small and his dick is way too big to fit. After reading your ideas for anal dildos, I decided to surprise my man and bought him a prostate massager online. When it arrived, I waited until he came home from work and then said ‘I’ve got a surprise I think you’ll like..”. I guided him to the couch, started giving him a hand job and then whipped out the prostate massager. He looked shocked but was okay and it slipped into his ass with a little lube. I’ll let you guess the rest but let’s just say prostate massager + handjob = VERY happy hubby! So thank you from both of us!
